Comet 41P / Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresakai (41P) was discovered in the second half of the 19th century. It makes one revolution around the Sun in 5.4 years. Despite its relatively small size (the diameter of the core is estimated at 1.4 km), the 41P is very active. For example, after the outbreak in 1973, it increased the brightness by 10 magnitudes and was temporarily observed with the naked eye. This suggests that 41P is a relatively “fresh” comet, only recently transferred to the current orbit.

Last year, 41P once again approached the Sun. March observations of ground-based observatories showed that the period of its rotation is about 20 hours. In May, when 41P passed perihelion, the SWIFT orbital observatory performed new observations of the comet. They showed that its rotation period increased noticeably and now ranges from 46 to 60 hours.
This is the strongest change in the period of rotation of a comet in the history of astronomical observations.The previous record holder was Comet 103P / Hartley 2. Its rotation period increased by 2 hours in 90 days. According to the researchers, if the 41P slowdown continued even after May, then now the period of its rotation can exceed 100 hours.

According to astronomers, a very large activity is to blame for so seriously changing the rotation period of 41P. SWIFT observations have shown that about half the surface of a comet is a source of emissions of a substance. For most tailed guests, this figure is about 3%. Given the small size of the 41P core, powerful jets literally turn it around, making the rotation chaotic. As a result, those parts of the comet that previously remained in the shadows are illuminated by the Sun, which only enhances its activity. It is possible that in the past, the comet rotated much faster, which contributed to its fragmentation and led to previously powerful flashes.
