Space food in tubes
A couple of years ago in Moscow appeared in the sale of space power tubes. It all started with the Exhibition of Economic Achievements, and now vending machines with them can be found not only in the Museum of Cosmonautics and the Planetarium, but also at railway stations, airports and other crowded places. I decided to conduct a tasting of the products offered and find out how cosmic it is.
For a start it is worth saying that now there are not much more tubes with food in space than in our kitchens. The cosmonauts store horseradish, mustard, ketchup, honey and other seasonings or sauces in tubes. Their main dishes are sublimated: in packages, where you need to add boiling water for cooking. There are also ordinary cans, although of unusually small size - 100 g per meal.
Tubes with borscht, meat, cottage cheese for astronautics are already past. But the technology and the recipe that has been preserved allows us to produce cosmic edible souvenirs today. Unfortunately, while the retail price of a tube is 300-400 rubles, so this is still a funny gift, and not a real alternative to snickers, shaverme and business lunch.
Now there are four manufacturers of space tubes in Moscow.Historically, the manufacturer of space food - Biryulyov plant experimental nutrition. They make rations for submariners, special services, and some dishes for astronauts.
Tubes and sublimates of the Biryulyov plant can be found in the cafe of the Museum of Cosmonautics.
The first, currently, commercial manufacturer, which introduced Spacefood tubes ("Space Nutrition") to the market, is the "Space Nutrition Laboratory" in cooperation with the Biryulyev Experimental Power Plant. Their first machine, installed in February 2015 at ENEA, caused a sensation. Tubes worth 300 rubles. swept away in a few minutes, and products that were manufactured for several months were dismantled in a few hours.
A year later, another manufacturer appeared under the Cosmopit brand. They ordered the development of compounding and technology from the Scientific Research Institute of Canning Technology (VNIITEK), which was once engaged in space food in tubes. Now Cosmopit has its own production, and an ever-expanding network of automata.
In 2017, the Experimental Production Special Food Laboratory appeared, which came out with a new product in tubes - the “Moscow” cake. The cake has a classic recipe, but is processed according to the laboratory's own technology, which ensures the safety of the product in three months, and promise to bring the shelf life to six. Now a cake in a tube can be bought in a souvenir shop at the central gate of the exhibition complex VDNH. At one time they were sold in the ABC of Taste network, plus they can be found at various food and technical exhibitions in Moscow.
Spacefood VS Cosmopit
The main competitors: Spacefood and Cosmopit range is quite wide, and regularly increases. The first difference in tubes is noticeable immediately: A cosmopite is weightier - 165 g versus 115 g for Spacefood.
At the Cosmopite, depending on the kit, an alcohol wipe or napkin, a “cosmo key” for convenient squeezing of the tube, and a thermocatalytic means for heating the product are attached to the tube.
Despite the large selection of dishes from that and another manufacturer, there is practically no duplicate, except for a pair - borscht and meat puree. Another curd desserts are similar.
Products are best consumed directly from the tube. When you try to squeeze them out onto a plate or spoon, you get a rather unpresentable picture.
In Spacefood, a tube is pierced more easily with a special tip in the lid. A cosmopite with perforation may experience difficulty, and it will be necessary to help with improvised means, widening the hole.
On sensations, Spacefood products undergo a more subtle processing, so it is easier to extract them from the tube. At Cosmopit come across larger particles that can get stuck when extruded, and they have to chew on.
In terms of taste, Spacefood is richer, either due to a richer set of spices, or due to a higher content of nutrients, primarily proteins. Despite this, in order to have a snack, Spacefood will need three tubes, and a Cosmopite will suffice with two.
Spacefood has almost everything. Cosmopit liked mushroom soup the most. And unexpectedly pleasantly surprised rice porridge with dried apricots. It tastes much better than hearing.
On April 12, the best gift for everyone - soup in a tube, regardless of the manufacturer. For children, cottage cheese is sweet, although astronauts, it is said, adore it, and even Americans barter our delicious cosmic curd for their tasteless cosmic burgers. Cake "Moscow" - nutritious and convenient snack for tea.
