How to clear the virtual memory of a computer using available methods
What is virtual memory?
Before you begin to directly address the issue of how to clear the virtual memory of a computer, you need to consider a few basic concepts.
First of all, it is worth noting that many users frankly do not understand what virtual memory really is, confusing it with slats of “RAM” (RAM). The so-called "RAM" is an integral part of a more general concept. Virtual memory is, in fact, a place on a hard disk where information is downloaded when there is a shortage of RAM to perform a task. Here, the paging file plays a significant role.
Paging file: use or not?
It is clear that a small virtual memory of a computer with a small “RAM” will not significantly accelerate the process. Of course, it is better to have a large amount of RAM in the system, since modern systems are equipped with very powerful components.
With a small “RAM”, you can edit the status of the paging file with a change in size in a big way. But this is recommended only for experienced users. With a sufficiently large amount of “RAM”, some system analysts suggest not using the paging file at all, since the processing of requests, downloading and unloading information in it is much faster than when accessing a hard disk.
Standard cleaning methods in Windows
Now we have come close to the question of how to clear the virtual memory of a computer. There are several basic ways to do this.
You can use the standard control panel with a choice of the “Administration” section, where you need to go to the “Local Security Policy”, select the “Security Policies” section and go to the “Security Settings” command. Here it is necessary to use the parameter “Completion of work: clearing the virtual memory paging file” and specify “Enable” in the properties (the “Properties” menu is invoked using PCM (right mouse click)). After that we confirm the changes.
In some cases, you can use the command line or the Run menu. When you enter the secpol.msc command in the field, you access the Local Security Policy, and when you use the regedit command, you access the registry.
In the registry, you can also find a solution to the issue of how to clear the virtual memory of a computer. To do this, you need to use access to the necessary parameters with the following sequence of opening key folders: root folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Next is the SYSTEM directory, then the CurrentControlSet section, the Control menu, then the Session Manager folder, the final goal is the Memory Management section.
Now you need to find the line ClearPageFileAtShutdown, then in the context menu select the line "Change". Further, in the field of the set parameter, the value “1” is set and the “OK” button is pressed.
In fact, this is practically the same cleaning process described above. It can be used if for some reason it is impossible to use the commands and control panel menus. By the way, this method is suitable for almost all systems. Whether you want to clear the virtual memory of Windows XP or even 8, there is no difference. But with the first method, the situation can be complicated due to different names or the location of the commands and menus themselves in different versions of Windows.
As practice shows, it is better for an inexperienced user not to do such things, but to use special optimizer programs that can free up memory while unloading resource-intensive processes (along with performing other actions to optimize PC operation) in automatic mode and without harming the entire system.
As a rule, for simple cleaning, any program has a special feature 1-Click Maintenance (one-click cleaning). However, which of the methods to use, each user decides for himself.
