Homemade Canary Cage
It is believed that people are divided into lovers of dogs and cats. However, this is not quite true: many prefer to keep birds as pets. Some are seduced by their singing, others by the beauty of their plumage, and third by the limited movement (although most of the owners still let the birds fly). Canaries are the most sought-after household items. They are inexpensive, lovely, beautiful, and the male can also be taught to sing. If you are going to join the ranks of supporters of birds, the first thing you need to think about before sending to the pet store is a canary cage. It must be prepared before buying the bird, because it is desirable to immediately place it in a permanent place of residence.
So it will be easier to pass the period of adaptation.
By the way, it is not necessary to buy a bird house. Canary do-it-yourself cages are easy to build, if you are not alien to handwork. They are cheaper, you are sure about the safety of the materials used, and most importantly - you can equip a canary house exactly the way you want it.
Before embarking on creativity, it is necessary to understand well which cells for canaries exist in principle - it will be easier to determine your preferences.
The easiest way to remove plastic cages with wire edges. However, you will not make them yourself; besides, they look pretty cheap. And there is no guarantee that plastic is not made in China. And therefore, it may well be toxic. If, nevertheless, stop at such a cell, choose a model that is not the cheapest and be sure to check the certificate.
The most environmentally friendly canary cage made of wood. Yes, and it looks elegant, fitting into almost any interior. In the shortcomings - fragility and difficult cleaning. But on the other hand, anyone who did not skip labor lessons at school can make a canary cage out of wood.
The most optimal is the combined option. In it, the base and the posts of the case are made of wood, and the walls are made of mesh or metal wire.
Canary cage dimensions
The next question that should be clarified: what dimensions need a house for the bird. With a single content, the canary cage should have an area of 20x35 cm and a height of 25.If you place a female with a female (for breeding) in one “room”, the size increases to 25x60x30, respectively. Chicks need a “flight” cage with a length of 120 cm, and a height and width of 50.
Any suitable canary bird cage can do more, but by no means less. The lack of space can lead to the fact that your pet will develop poorly, and even cripple, trying to fly.
The easiest way is to build self-made canary cages from ordinary plywood boxes. It is enough to dismantle one of the long walls and insert a wire net instead, and to accommodate the tenant and his maintenance, cut the “door” at the side and close it with the same net. Or make a removable "roof." However, it is undesirable to leave a canary in such a house for a long time. First, the care will be quite difficult. Secondly, every time the bird will be frightened. Third, it will not be enough light. But for a one-time transportation of canaries in the cool season, the idea is quite suitable.
House of wicker
Canary cages woven from willow twigs look very authentic. For such a dwelling, you will need 45 wooden racks of 45 cm and 24 additional, 37 long, a dozen lozin 19 centimeters, the same twigs, but already 65 long (of which a lid will be made), and the binding rods thinner.
The first step will be the manufacture of the base cross with a diameter of 17 cm. It is braided with thin blanks using the twisting method. After three rows they are divided into pairs, in the ninth they are separated separately. Then the racks are sharpened and stuck into the frame, which is bent and fixed at the top.
The braiding begins: seven rows in the “rope” style, four - with a long twig, one - again with a rope and another twisting.
Next, an indent of 7 cm is made and the weaving is renewed with a “string”. After three rows go to the "rod" in 4 rods, then the edge in the style of "track" - and the cell is ready.
The lid is constructed of 20 lozin: two rows are made by twisting, then the base is divided and twisted again, after seven rows of rods are divided and the weaving ends
The last stage is fixing the lid and equipping the bird house with a feeding trough, a perch and a trough.
It is clear that without certain skills canary cage from the vine will not work.So first you have to master the skills of weaving and practice on something more simple in form.
By execution, it is in many ways similar to the previous design. Bamboo is used as racks; at the top it is cut at an angle - to give the islander style. Both the top and transverse planks (thinner bamboo stalks can be placed under them) are tied with the same vine.
This wooden canary cage is made simpler than the previous one - no need to be able to weave. It is enough to learn how to knit a vine.
What tree to take
However, it is still recommended to prefer the combination “wood - metal” for your pets: make the base and the posts wooden, take the walls with rods or netting. In addition, in this design the birds will be less noisy - the tree has good noise absorbing properties. For the combined canary cage (photo), dense woods are best suited. In particular, the pine for the bird's house is not suitable: in the course of exploitation, shells are formed on it. In addition to low aesthetic qualities, they can cause injury to inhabitants.
For cell elements, it is proposed to take linden, birch, ash, cedar, oak and larch. They should be thoroughly oshkurit, slightly burned with a burner and cleaned to smoothness.
The canary cage must first be safe. Therefore, the rods (mesh) should be made of materials that are not susceptible to oxidation and are not too soft. Zinc and copper are definitely not suitable. The best material poultry farmers recognized steel wire with a stainless layer of high resistance. In diameter, it must be at least one and a half and more than three millimeters. Before you cut the wire on the elements, it must be straightened.
Combined cell: materials and tools
For a single house under the canary will need:
- Reiki: two 6 cm long, 16 thin and long (they will be cut to the desired length as the work proceeds), one is 5 cm.
- Plywood (dimensions shown above).
- Wire, pre-straightened.
- Drill and screwdriver.
- Jigsaw with pliers and nippers (to fit the workpiece to size).
- Emery of different grain (to make the wooden details smoothness).
The door for the cage can be bought ready; if you do it yourself - take care of the crochet and canopies. But it makes more sense to spend money on the factory one.
Combined cell: base
The first thing that is being constructed is a pallet on which the entire structure will be mounted. For him, the screws are connected in a rectangle of 2 slats by 40 (one of them is narrow, by 5 cm) and 60 cm. Under the size of the rectangle is cut plywood and fixed below. In this way there will be a gap through which the pallet can be changed.
Combined cell: skeleton
It needs frames, three pieces. One will be the basis for the roof, the other two - fasteners for rods. Each of them is made of thinner slats. On all of them and on the base at the same distance and exactly under each other, future holes for rods are marked with a pencil. The distance between them is from one and a half to two centimeters. A longer distance will give your pet a chance to get free, while a smaller canary cage will be close and will limit the possibility of observing pets. When marking in the lower contour is left unlocked doorway.
By marking holes are drilled: through the frames, at the base - half the thickness of the slats.Impermeable holes must be in the frame above the doorway.
Combined cell: assembly
Straightened wire is cut into the elements. Their number should correspond to the number of drilled holes in the base, and the length should be equal to 27 cm. Just in case, you can make the segments a little longer: if necessary, the excess at the end of work is bitten by clippers. The resulting twigs are passed through all three frames and inserted into the base. At the bottom they can be poured with glue or sealant to hold more tightly. Before use of a clamp read structure: glue should not be toxic.
The result is a 25 cm tall canary cage. If the individual rods are too long, their height will level off. The roof can be a mesh rectangle or a sheet of plywood; in the first case it is screwed with wire or fastened with screws with a very wide cap. In the second, the same screws with which the base was assembled are sufficient.
It remains to hang the door, drinking bowl, rocker and feeder, after which the canary cage can be considered ready.
It is clear that we collected a bird's house from sanded and stripped wooden parts. However, the tree has a tendency to crack and darken. In order for it to retain its attractive appearance longer, you can cover it with something at least outside. The modern chemical industry produces a lot of varnishes and paints, assuring potential buyers of their absolute safety. However, it is unlikely that someone tested this product on canaries. In order to avoid illnesses and death of birds, it is better to dwell on water-soluble acrylic paints with which children paint: the risk of their harmful effect on birds is considered minimal.
A couple of words about the pallet
Care for songbirds should be regular (otherwise the whole apartment will smell of litter) and careful so that canaries experience the least possible stress. The best option is to remove the contaminated pallet through the slit (which we left when assembling the cage). Question: what to use as a pallet?
The simplest option is a sheet of thick cardboard. You can simply throw it away if necessary and replace it with a new one. However, cardboard has a significant drawback: it absorbs moisture. And birds' droppings are liquid and can soak the pallet down to plywood itself, after which the base will very quickly acquire a persistent, indestructible and unpleasant odor. Therefore, it is better to buy a sheet of thin aluminum, cut a proportioned rectangle out of it and wash it after each use. To make your pets more comfortable, such a pallet can be covered with a bird mat.
The canary cage does not have to be picked up by bars on all four sides. If it permanently stands near the wall, the “blank” side can be made completely wooden. At least from the same plywood or thin chipboard. On the other hand, the backdrop made of these materials will not look too good, and it will become difficult to clean it - and birds tend to scatter food in all directions and slap nearby surfaces. You can replace plywood with thin plastic if you are sure it is non-toxic. Or order a thin board for the wall from the joiner: let it be no less dirty, but beautiful. Just make the “blank” wall removable so that you can remove it for cleaning.
If you want to hang not swings, but perches, choose smooth thin sticks and fasten them to the transverse frames.
After settling, the cage will only be happy for their birds and enjoy communicating with them.
