Engine cleaner: types, reviews
Owners of older cars with high-mileage engines often have to use various engine cleaners, which in theory extend service life. However, the controversy surrounding the washing of the motors will not subside. Someone believes that this operation harms the mechanism, although other drivers are sure of the opposite. Let's see what kind of engine cleaners are, whether flushing is effective and whether it is needed at all. It is also appropriate to talk about flushing the fuel system. All this will be discussed below.
What are engine cleaners?
To clean the motor from different deposits, there are different methods and preparations. The first and most common is the method of full volume washing. Note that this method is often used at various service stations, but its efficiency is low. If the old motor has thick oil deposits in the chambers, then full volume washing will not be suitable. Need special chemicals and installation of forced recycling. As for the full volume flushing, it is simple.
To begin with, all the oil from the oil system is drained, then a special flushing oil (or special liquid) is poured. Most often it is a simple cheap mineral oil with a high content of detergents. At the same time, the old oil filter is removed and a new one is put in place (preferably cheap, since it should be thrown away after washing).
After refilling the flushing oil and changing the filter, the engine must be started and heated up for 10-15 minutes. After that, the waste oil can be drained. Most likely, it will be black and with the content of large particles of dirt. The residual waste liquid can be removed using a vacuum pump, which is available in almost all professional workshops. Most drivers do not have such equipment, so after removing the crankcase cover, it is advisable to wait about 20 minutes for all the oil to fully merge. After that, it remains to put a new oil filter, close the crankcase lid and add new oil.
In reviews, drivers point to the effectiveness of this method on more or less new cars.Owners of dirty engines always remain unhappy with full-volume washing and resort to aggressive means.
This method uses a special engine cleaner (Hi Gear, for example), which works in conjunction with old oil. It is poured to the old oil. The composition of the mild engine cleaner includes solvent and detergent additives, but their content is small. Cleaning the system is slow, so experts advise adding flushing agent for 300-500 km before changing the oil. Moreover, the performance properties and viscosity of the latter in the process of interaction with the cleaner do not change.
Judging by the reviews of owners of cars with old engines (with a large layer of sediment), such flushing is ineffective for engines with significant mileage. In addition, it is likely that such flushing will cause the detachment of a large particle of dirt, and that may clog any oil channel.
With regular use, such flushing is not dangerous and is suitable for not very dirty engines. After using the flushing agent, the old oil is replaced, the remaining grease is removed by a vacuum pump, and the new oil is poured.
For its implementation uses a powerful aggressive tool that is poured into the engine before changing the oil. Such drugs are usually called "five-minute" or "seven-minute". They are charged with the system (the old oil must be inside), the motor is allowed to run for 10 minutes (the exact time is on the package), the used oil is drained together with the preparation. The filter, of course, must be changed to a new one.
It is important to remove residual old oil before flushing the engine and pouring fresh grease. Therefore, in any case, you need a vacuum pump. It is he who most effectively copes with this task. If you drain the oil from the crankcase, not all residues of aggressive chemical additives will be removed. This engine cleaner is quite effective, and it is recommended to use it systematically - after 2-3 oil changes. In this case, layers of sediment will not form on the walls, and this will greatly increase the resource of the motor.
Does it harm the motor?
In the reviews, car owners write that such an aggressive tool has a devastating effect on oil seals, which can tritely leak after flushing the engine. Therefore it is necessary to choose a reliable engine cleaner. Gear, for example, provides fairly reliable soft and aggressive liquids. However, when using means of unknown manufacturers, the seals can really be damaged, and then they will have to be replaced with new ones.
To perform professional flushing, a special installation is used to create forced circulation of lubricant through the channels. With the help of a professional cleaner gasoline engines (and diesel too) you can effectively remove pollution, without fear of blockage of oil channels. At the same time, even the mesh of the oil receiver will remain clean.
The installation works as follows. The oil filter is removed, the waste oil is drained from the motor. A fitting with a hose from the installation is screwed into the hole. Another hose is connected to the neck for filling the oil, the third fitting is connected to the hole for draining the oil.
An aggressive liquid is poured into the installation tank, and this unit “chases” it in a circle, effectively removing all contaminants inside. All dirt lingers on the filter of the installation itself and does not get back into the engine. Most often, such devices have transparent hoses in some places, and you can see on them how the flushing liquid turns black from dirt. This process can be carried out within one hour, but it depends on the state of the engine. Such cleaning is extremely effective and is suitable even for very dirty engines. Many owners of old cars in the reviews indicate that their engines gain new life after cleaning in this way.
Naturally, with such flushing, there is no need to start the engine, the installation itself injects the necessary pressure and washes away the dirt with the help of aggressive chemistry. After completion of the procedure, the engine must be rinsed again with mineral flushing oil. This is necessary in order to completely remove from the inside the aggressive substances that are bound to remain there. Well, and then you can pour the "native" oil, change the filter and ride. Similar cleaners of diesel engines (and gasoline too) are on many stations. Although this service is more expensive than standard cleaning, sometimes drivers have no choice.
Engine Fuel System Cleaners
Not only the engine oil channels, but also the fuel system may need cleaning. When the engine does not start well, the problem may be in the injectors - it is sometimes necessary to wash them. This is done with the help of special cleaners of the fuel system. Liqui Molly, Hi-Gear, Suprotec, Autoprofi Line - all these manufacturers offer different tools. They are added to gasoline in a certain ratio (always indicated on the package), as a result of which the composition of the flammable liquid varies slightly. In particular, the oxygen content in the fuel increases. This indicates the presence of additional oxygenates, due to which the combustion of the fuel improves. This is exactly what is needed to clean the engine parts.
The drugs really work. After using them, the engine functions better, fuel consumption per 100 kilometers is reduced, and less residual hydrocarbons are found in the exhaust. This is one of the most important indicators that determine the degree of contamination of the fuel system and the engine as a whole.
In the Russian market, such drugs are inexpensive - their average price is 300-400 rubles per bottle of 250-300 ml.
